Tangential view of pine cambium & derivatives In this image of a pine (Pinus strobus) stem, one can view a tangential section through the vascular cambium. Note the extremely long appearance of the fusiform initials. Also clearly observed are a large number of multicellular uniseriate ray initials characteristic of pines and other gymnosperms. The cambium is nonstoried inasmuch as there is no regular horizontal stacking of the fusiform or ray initials. Note the presence of prominent primary pit fields in the very thin primary radial walls of the fusiform initials. |
